Major Consultation on Industrial HempHemp

Published 21 May 2026 by AQIC

Health Canada has launched a public consultation on potential amendments to the Industrial Hemp Regulations (IHR). This initiative aims, in particular, to reduce certain regulatory requirements as well as the administrative burden on businesses in the sector.

Businesses, organizations, and stakeholders in the hemp and cannabis sectors are invited to participate in this consultation by June 30, 2026.

Holders of industrial hemp licenses are also invited to complete the cost-benefit analysis questionnaire. This will help assess the potential costs and benefits of the proposed changes for the businesses concerned.

This consultation could have significant implications for the sector’s future in the coming years. It represents an opportunity to help shape a regulatory framework that is better suited to the realities of businesses and the potential of industrial hemp.

Reducing the administrative burden is essential to enabling the hemp sector to take off and reach its full potential. In particular, hemp can play an important role in decarbonizing the construction industry, remediating contaminated soil, and diversifying agricultural income.

We therefore encourage all stakeholders to make their voices heard and to participate in this consultation before the deadline.

Deadline for participation: June 30, 2026.
