Frequently asked questions

What are the economic contributions of the cannabis industry?

The cannabis industry represents 100,000 direct and indirect jobs in Canada and $214.7 million in direct revenues to the Quebec government for the year 2021. Since legalization, and as of 2022, Quebec has received $468.9 million in direct revenues. The economic scope of the cannabis industry is colossal. The recreational market alone generated an overall net profit for the SQDC of $75.7 million in fiscal year 2021-2022 and tax revenues in the form of consumption and excise taxes estimated at $195.4 million, of which $139 million was for Quebec alone. With $366 million in farm cash receipts, cannabis was already among the top five agricultural crops in Quebec in 2020, according to MAPAQ, just behind maple syrup. If the trend continues, it could move up to 4th place in the next data update.

What is the industry's impact on the health care system and prevention?

In 2021, $75.7 million was reinvested in research, education and harm prevention through the Addiction Fund and the Cannabis Prevention and Research Fund. As a result, since legalization and as of 2022, $168.5 million in net profits have been generated by the SQDC ($75.7 million in 2021, $66.5 million in 2020 and $26.3 million in 2019). Legalization has also allowed for the establishment of standards and quality control of products.

How much of the illicit market has the Quebec cannabis industry recovered?

The SQDC says it has recovered 58.5% of illicit market sales by 2021-2022.

Is it true that cannabis has therapeutic benefits?

Numerous peer-reviewed scientific studies have been conducted since 2010 and have demonstrated the therapeutic efficacy of cannabis in the treatment of symptoms related to cancer, multiple sclerosis, epilepsy, gastrointestinal disorders, but also anxiety, insomnia and menopause, among others. However, research on cannabis faces a significant lack of funding, which penalizes the development of knowledge about its effects on health. In fact, Health Canada's Scientific Advisory Committee on Cannabis-Containing Health Products "recommends that governments and funding agencies increase support for high-quality clinical research on the safety and efficacy of cannabis, CBD and other phytocannabinoids. In its 2022 report, it also states that it "unanimously agreed that CBD is safe and tolerable for short-term use." We invite you to visit our "3 Cannabis Myths" page to learn more about the plant and its properties.

What are the therapeutic benefits of cannabis?

As the Government of Canada website states, cannabis and its components are used for a variety of reasons. In addition to recreational cannabis, there is of course the growing importance of medical cannabis to treat the symptoms associated with many diseases. Cannabis can be used in the manufacture of paper, fabric, rope and twine, and construction materials, as well as food, cosmetics, plastics and fuel. And even in soil decontamination! You can find a complete list of the plant's various uses here.

Is cannabis use socially accepted in Quebec?

According to data from the Institut de la statistique du Québec, 63% of Quebecers believe it is socially acceptable to occasionally use cannabis for non-medical purposes, up from 48% in 2018. For alcohol, more than 100 years after the end of prohibition in Quebec, this rate is 85%.
