Canada's legal cannabis industry contributed nearly $7.7 billion to the country's GDP in 2023, according to the latest figures from Statistics Canada.

The largest part of this contribution was cannabis production, with nearly $6.8 billion, while retail sales added nearly $900 million to this amount.

The illicit cannabis market added nearly $2.7 billion to Canada's GDP in 2023, with a further $892 million coming from illicit cannabis retailers, both online and in-store.

In comparison, the contribution of legal cannabis to Canada's GDP exceeded that of breweries, wineries and distilleries. In 2023, breweries contributed just over $3 billion to Canada's GDP, while wineries and distilleries contributed just over $1 billion. Legal cannabis stores alone contributed almost as much to GDP in 2023 as wineries and distilleries combined.

The contribution of licensed cannabis production to Canada's GDP surpassed that of gold and silver ore mining, local credit unions, furniture and related product manufacturing, the postal service, gaming industries, potash mining, dairy product manufacturing, and more.
