The Association québécoise de l’industrie du chanvre et du cannabis has officially submitted a brief to Health Canada as part of the consultation on potential amendments to the Industrial Hemp Regulations.
For AQIC, this consultation represents an important opportunity to modernize a regulatory framework that continues to limit the full development of a strategic agricultural, industrial and environmental sector for Quebec and Canada.
Industrial hemp has significant potential: agricultural diversification, development of biobased materials, local processing, soil health, carbon sequestration, innovation, exports and regional value creation.
However, this potential remains constrained by a regulatory framework still largely inspired by a controlled-substance approach, even when the activities involved present a low risk of intoxication.
In its brief, AQIC calls on Health Canada to adopt a more modern and proportionate approach, based on the actual risk profile of the activities, materials and products involved.
