To celebrate Earth Day, here are 5 benefits of plants from the Cannabaceae (cannabis) family for the environment:
- It is a hardy plant that requires only a small amount of water and pesticides since insects and rodents are not attracted to the plant. In addition, it has a fast growth rate.
- It is a powerful decontaminant for soils and would effectively reduce their PFAS content.
- It can be used as a thermal insulator for roofs, walls and ceilings and allows the construction of healthier habitats.
- The plant is considered "carbon negative" since it absorbs CO2 from the air. According to some research, it would even absorb more CO2 per hectare than a commercial forest.
- Its fibers are very durable and versatile. They are used to make biodegradable plastic, but also some car parts made of carbon or glass fibers.
