15,000 Denials at the SQDC Reignite the Debate on the Legal AgeDaily news

Over the past year, more than 15,000 young people have been denied access to the SQDC because they were under 21. 

Jean-Sébastien Fallu, a full professor at the University of Montreal and an addiction specialist, believes that setting the legal age at 21 rather than 18 is a serious mistake.

According to him, this ban does not prevent young people from using drugs, but rather drives them toward the black market, where they are exposed to unregulated and toxic products, while perpetuating a harmful taboo surrounding drug use.

“We could offer products with lower THC levels to young people—for example, those aged 18 to 21 in Quebec—through the SQDC, rather than letting them think they won’t use them. That’s a bit of wishful thinking.”
